Rock climbing Pedra da Gavea in Rio is a great adventure. At 842 meters high, Pedra da Gávea is considered the largest seaside monolith in the world, as well as being one of the postcards of Rio de Janeiro.

The most famous and popular route in Pedra da Gavea is Passagem dos Olhos, listed as one of the 50 Classic Routes in Brazil. Passagem dos Olhos is a medium-grade route (5.9/5a), but it should not be underestimated, as Rio de Janeiro has a strong grading and because the route impresses with its height, verticality and for being practically all horizontal.

It is one of the most impressive routes in Rio. There are even sections where it is necessary to down climb, see the photo. A route for climbers with experience in rock climbing and multi-pitch routes and who are not afraid of heights or horizontal falls. It is also important to know techniques for ascend using a fixed rope in case of falling off the route.

It takes around an hour and a half to reach the base and approximately the same time to walk down from the summit. Therefore, you should reserve practically an entire day for this climb, as well as being used to long trails and in excellent physical condition.
